The Aizuri Quartet has had a wonderful Spring full of rich musical experiences and exciting developments! First up, we are thrilled to have won third prize in the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in London. In our first international competition, we loved the opportunity to dig into some of the greatest string quartet literature, meet and hear many fantastic groups, and perform in stunning Wigmore Hall. We’re also thrilled to share the news that we have been named the 2015-2016 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, where we will perform several times throughout next season. And finally, the new Curtis-Coursera course, “The World of the String Quartet,” has been released! The course is hosted by Arnold Steinhardt and musicologist Mia Chung, and explores the rich history and repertoire of the string quartet. We are honored to perform and discuss excerpts of great string quartets, including Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, Mendelssohn’s Op. 80, Ravel, Debussy, Bartok’s Fifth and Sixth String Quartets, Ives’ String Quartet Nr. 1 and Schoenberg’s Second String Quartet with soprano Rachel Sterrenberg. Be sure to sign up – it’s free, online, and available here!
